In my opinion, this is hands down the best ever homemade Chipotle black bean burger recipe I ever made! If I say I had a fair share of trying to find an ideal plant-based burger that my family would not turn their noses at, believe me! ( pretty hard task if you ask me ). Therefore I was getting frustrated at those homemade burgers as they were either too dry, crumbly or simply lacking in flavor. Taking all the above into consideration :
chipotle black bean burger challenge:
- easy
- healthy
- juicy
- satisfying
- spicy
- not mushy
- NOT CRUMBLING
I can easily say that I managed to achieve all of the above 😉 Let’s have a look at how I achieved that by breaking those tasks down.
easy – You throw everything in a food processor and the machine does the work for you… Can it get any easier?
healthy – this recipe is made purely out of wholesome ingredients! WIN-WIN.
juicy – thanks to 2 flax eggs and vegan cheese those were nice and moist 🙂
satisfying– well add all the above + all the below = SATISFYING 😁
not mushy – DO NOT over-process your beans. You want some texture. Learn that from this brilliant guy. You should definitely check him out!
not crumbling – Burgers made with meat and/or eggs have lots of sticky saturated fats which help them hold together. For this reason, I am using vegan cheese is helping here 🙂 In addition, some sticky ingredients are also wet in this recipe: tomato paste, coconut aminos, in other words:
I can guarantee you – these Chipotle black bean burgers are really something rather special. Big flavor and super-satisfying to tuck into.
Black bean burger
Ingredients
- 2 cups black beans
- 1 medium onion
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- ½ cup vegan cheese
- 2 tsp cumin
- 2 tsp chipotle paste
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp smoked paprika
- 2 flax eggs ( 2 tbls ground flax + 6 tbls water)
- 1 tbls coconut aminos
- 1 tbls ketchup
- 2 tbls tomato paste
- 1 tbls miso paste
- ½ cup coriander
Instructions
- Heat a non-stick frying pan and add onion.
- Cook it till translucent.
- Add black bean to food processor and pulse few times just to break them down just a tiny bit.
- Add the rest of the ingredient and blitz till combined. Do not overprocess the mix it as it will be just a big mush – which we dont want.
- Wet your nads slightly and for patties. I get 6 large or 8 avarage size patties out of this recipe.
- You can add oil to the frying pan and fry the black bean burgers for the crispy outside but you can also bake those.
- If you are baking them: Preheat the oven to 180° and bake them for around 20 min tull slighty brown. You don't want to over bake them as they will be very dry.
- That's it! ENJOY 😊.
💡 interesting facts:
- A chipotle pepper is a smoked, dried jalapeño. The paste usually includes ingredients such as onion, garlic, tomato purée, vinegar, spices, dried herbs, and sugar.
- Black beans are classified as legumes. Also known as turtle beans because of their hard, shell-like appearance, black beans are, in fact, the edible seeds of the plant.
- Miso is a traditional Japanese seasoning, made by fermenting rice and/or barley with soybeans, salt and the fungus called Kojikin
If you don’t have black bean you can try other of my burger/patties recipes like mung bean burger or my chickpea burger. Both are equally delicious and easy to do! And if you are looking for delicious homemade buns I recommend trying the curious chickpea website for a great recipe!
I live black bean burgers. I have trouble with mine falling apart, so this will be a big help!

*I got a kick out of the “Not crumbling” because black bean burgers that I’ve made have definitely been crumbly! I’ll bet the chipotle flavor is a great addition to these! Yum. I’ll try them! Thanks for the great recipe!

You had me at Chipotle 😉
Black beans are so versatile. Have you ever used them in sweet baked goods, such as brownies?
