History

Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish concept that has gained popularity worldwide in recent years. It is often translated as “coziness” or “comfort,” but it encompasses much more than just physical comfort. Hygge is about creating a sense of warmth, contentment, and well-being, whether alone or with loved ones.

The origins of hygge can be traced back to the 18th century in Denmark, when it was used as a way to describe the feeling of warmth and conviviality that comes from gathering around a fireplace on a cold winter evening. Over time, hygge became more closely associated with Danish culture, as the concept of creating a cozy atmosphere in one’s home became an important part of Danish identity. In the 20th century, hygge became even more important to the Danish people as a way to combat the long, dark winters. With limited daylight and harsh weather conditions, Danes turned to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in their homes to lift their spirits and provide a sense of comfort and security.

What is hygge

In recent years, the concept of adding hygge to life has gained worldwide popularity, with books, articles, and even entire lifestyle brands dedicated to the idea of creating a cozy and comfortable home environment. However, it is important to note that hygge is not just about the physical environment, but also about the emotional connections we make with others and the sense of well-being that comes from taking time to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures in life.

Hygge is a Danish concept that roughly translates to “coziness” or “contentment.” It’s all about creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere and taking pleasure in simple things. Here are some tips on how to add more hygge to your life

Adding hygge to life- by Creating a cozy atmosphere

Adding hygge to your life by making your living space cozy, inviting, and comfortable. Start using warm lighting with soft, or candles to create a cozy warm ambiance. Incorporate soft and tactile textiles like plush rugs, cozy blankets, and fluffy pillows made of natural materials like wool and cotton. Bring inside more elements from nature such as houseplants, flowers, or wooden furniture to add warmth and that connection with the outdoors. Keep your home tidy and clutter-free to maintain a sense of calm. By incorporating these elements, you can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that promotes relaxation, connection, and well-being in your home.

Enjoy simple pleasures

Adding hygge to life is all about finding joy in the little things. Take time to savor your morning coffee, indulge in your favorite treat, or curl up with a good book. Take the time to connect with nature, whether it’s going for a walk in the park, sitting in your garden, or simply noticing the changing seasons out the window. Slow down and be present in the moment, like savoring a cup of tea, a delicious meal, or simply taking a few deep breaths. Practice gratitude by focusing on the positive aspects of your life and express appreciation regularly, I love doing this first thing in the morning. That sets my attitude for the day.

Connect with others

Connecting with others is a fundamental aspect of adding hygge to life, as it promotes the importance of building meaningful relationships and fostering a sense of community. Surrounding yourself with people who bring joy, positivity, and warmth into your life can enhance the hygge atmosphere. Create deep connections by engaging in heartfelt conversations, sharing your experiences, and creating meaningful memories together. it could be also as simple as sharing a meal or gathering around the fire.

Embrace nature

Get outside and enjoy the natural world. Take a walk in the park, go for a hike, or simply sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

Embracing the beauty of nature is like receiving a warm hug from Mother Earth herself! Take a moment or two to just step outside and feel the breeze on your skin or listen to the chirping of birds, and enjoy the beauty of a sunset or a starry night sky. I schedule my two hours of walks in the forest every single week. Keeps me recharged and slows my busy brain!

You can also connect with nature by getting your hands dirty while gardening or planting flowers. Even something so simple as lying down on the grass and gazing at the clouds has a way of grounding us and calming us.

Adding hygge to life by practicing self-care

This is a pretty important one. I feel that these days we forget to take care of ourselves. For some reason, we are so busy in our lives with a never-ending to-do list that forgetting ourselves is easy…

Practicing self-care is a powerful way to add hygge into your life, as it prioritizes your physical, mental, and emotional health. Taking that time to take care of yourself can help you create a place of self-love, self-compassion, and self-awareness, which are really essential for a happy fulfilling life. There are a few things you can do to take care of yourself!

  • nourishing your body with nutritious and delicious food, drinking enough water, getting enough hours of restful sleep, and doing some sort of regular exercise that you enjoy! Certainly, it can also mean taking a warm bath, or treating yourself to that monthly massage!
  • Adding hygge to life by taking care of your mind. This can involve setting healthy boundaries, managing your stress, and practicing mindfulness or meditation. Plan some activities that bring you joy and help you relax, such as reading a book, listening to calming music, or going for a gentle walk. It can also involve looking for support from trusted friends or family, and even a therapist when needed.
  • taking care of your emotions. Emotional self-care involves honoring your emotions and allowing yourself to feel and express them in a healthy way. This can mean journaling, talking to a friend, or engaging in creative outlets that allow you to process your thoughts and emotions. It also means being kind and compassionate to yourself, practicing self-acceptance, and letting go of self-judgment.

Home – hygge decor

Danish people spend a lot of their free time at home, which is why they take great importance to interior design. This does not mean, however, that they buy expensive, designer furniture and arrange their apartments according to the latest trends. On the contrary, as Christina B. Kjeldsen, author of books about the Scandinavian style, notes, “hygge depends on how much honesty there is in the objects you surround yourself with.” The furniture of the house should therefore reflect the personality of its owner. For example, you can place items that remind you of a particular moment from the past in visible places – e.g. travel souvenirs, family photos, and old books.

A hygge-style house is also eclectic, combining different aesthetics – next to an antique wooden table, there is a place for modern chairs and an industrial lamp. The Danes also love natural materials – wood, stone, leather, canvas, wicker, and metals. These materials combine simplicity with sophistication and are

Adding hygge to life – Hyggekrog

Hyggekrog refers to a cozy little nook or corner in your home where you can experience hygge. It’s a dedicated space designed for relaxation, comfort, and enjoyment, typically adorned with soft lighting, soft seating, fluffy blankets, and personal touches that create a sense of warmth and intimacy. A hyggekrog can be a reading corner, a window seat, a snug fireplace area, or any other small space that invites you to slow down, unwind, and savor the moment. It’s a place where you can curl up with a good book, slowly sip your cup of hot tea, or simply enjoy the company of loved ones in a cozy and inviting atmosphere.

Creating a hyggekrog in your home is a great way to cultivate hygge and add a touch of comfort and coziness to your daily life. In addition, if your piggy bank allows you can get some inspiration on hygge furniture 😉.
