Oranges are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C, thiamine, folate, and potassium.

  • Vitamin C. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. One large orange provides over 100% of the RDI (4Trusted Source).

Lemons provide several vitamins and minerals.

  • It may prevent stomach ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.
  • Ginger was reported to decrease age-related oxidative stress markers

Tummeric

  • Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.
  • Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure

Raw honey is very important for this healing cough tonic

  • Full of Antioxidants
High-quality organic honey is packed with antioxidants, including phenolic compounds and organic acids.
  • Contains Antifungal and Antibacterial Properties
Organic raw honey also contains antifungal and antibacterial properties, which make it a suitable remedy for skin conditions like eczema, dandruff, and acne.

It contains an acidic pH that helps promote oxygen release, which plays an important role in healing wounds. Important notes to make this healing cough tonic:

I use only organic ingredients in these recipes because I do not peel them, I use them whole with the skin on. The skin or peel of fruits and vegetables are generally higher in antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals than the flesh.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I use regular honey instead of raw organic honey?

While you can use regular honey, raw organic honey is recommended for its potential higher nutrient content and potential health benefits. The idea for this recipe is to be the most nutritious and potent.

What is the purpose of adding black pepper to the tonic?

Black pepper enhances the bioavailability of curcumin in turmeric, allowing your body to absorb its anti-inflammatory properties more effectively.

Is it necessary to use an organic orange and lemon, or can I use conventionally grown ones?

Using organic citrus fruits is recommended to avoid potential pesticide residues, and because we are using whole oranges and lemons, skins are included.

Is it possible to use ground turmeric and ginger instead of fresh ones in this recipe?

Yes, you can substitute ground turmeric and ginger for the fresh ones if needed. However, be mindful of the potency of ground spices, and adjust the quantities based on your taste preferences. Start with smaller amounts and add more gradually, as ground spices can have a more concentrated flavor compared to fresh.

💡 Fun idea:

A great gift for a sick friend or tea lover! I always want to do something for a friend who is under the weather, but never know how to help. A jar of one of these syrups is just the thing. This is such a delicious stir-in for flavouring hot tea or water, that they make a great gift for tea-loving friends, too.

I add healing cough tonic to tea instead of lemon slices, and drizzle that over oats, my pancakes but in autumn and winter I simply spoon it in my mouth 😉

Interesting. I have fermented honey / garlic and fermented honey/lemons that I used depending upon the way that I am feeling. This year I took my first foray into Fire Cider. Honey is a very powerful tool for maintaining one’s health. Thank you for the recipe, I may have to try it next time I pick up some citrus.
